Sensorineural Hearing Loss Definition What is sensorineural hearing loss?  As defined, it is one type of hearing loss the root cause of which is found in the vestibulocochlear nerve or Cranial nerve VIII, the inner ear of the person or on the central processing centers or cores of the human brain.  This sensorineural hearing loss can be classified into mild loss, moderate or severe hearing loss which may lead to total deafness.

Most sensorineural hearing loss that occurs is being caused by some abnormal hair cells that are seen in the Corti organ in the cochlea.  In some unusual cases, sensorineural hearing loss happened in the cranial nerve VIII or involving the auditory parts of the brain.  However, there are rare instances where only the auditory cores of the human brain is being affected thus, sounds can be normally heard by the person affected but perception of this sound can be so poor that speech is not at all understandable.

Reason for Sensorineural Hearing Loss

As most sensorineural hearing loss has been attributed to the poor function of the hair cell, let us know the reasons why or what causes these hair cells to malfunction.  There are different diagnoses of how this happens.  Sensorineural hearing impairment can be congenital or the ailment can be acquired.  How does this happen?

Sensorineural Hearing Loss Damages

We can say that the damage is congenital due to the lack of development of the cochlea and in some rare cases, chromosomal syndromes occur. However, we can also fairly say that sensorineural hearing loss is acquired through inflammation like meningitis, mumps, measles and the like.  Other causes of acquired sensorineural hearing loss include taking of ototoxic drugs, physical trauma, noise inducement or prolonged and frequent exposure to loud sounds and noises, presbycusis or age-related hearing loss, and other related causes.  In some instances, acquired sensorineural hearing loss is caused to long-term exposure to some environmental noise like living near the airports or super highways where noise level is too high, frequent use of personal audio gadgets like ipods, headphones and the like with so much high volume. And in some cases, the cause is genetics, too, inherited from the family.
